The ‘Bourgeoisie’ the term
which defined the French revolution and created a system that is followed by
most of the democracies. Since, I have started with a fairly unknown term to
laymen, so let’s try to understand the term and its implication that occurred
in the past and is still happening as I write, and u read this article.
The term ‘Bourgeoisie’ refer
to people with a certain cultural and financial capital belonging to the middle
or upper middle class, is the simplest description of ‘Bourgeoisie’. Let’s
drive in a little deeper to understand what really were the motives of this newly
emerged class.
From the time of the discovery of America
and the discovery of the sea route to India (end of 15th century)
there began a shift of power in Europe from Italy and Germany to the countries
on the Atlantic Ocean; England, Holland and to a lesser extend to France. In these
countries an ever-stronger commercialism developed. The cities grew and a purely
capitalist industry began to develop. And with this economic ascendency these
countries began to assume cultural and intellectual leadership.
However, this growing capitalism
could not in the long run find room in the old political form of medieval
feudal society (feudalism was the system in European medieval societies of
the 10th to 13th centuries CE whereby a social hierarchy
was established based on local administrative control and the distribution of
land into units called fiefs). The bourgeois becoming conscious of their
social importance was not longer satisfied with their humble position. They had
to demand a voice in commercial politics, taxation and foreign policy. They had
to oppose upper-class privilege and impose political forms within which theirs
social and economic interest could be uninterruptedly pursued. As the new class
grew stronger it strove for a new form where whatever the trappings, the centre
of gravity would lie in a representative assembly where the wealthy bourgeoisie
would have the upper hand.
Now we know that the inception of
the representative form of governance is never meant to emancipate the poor and
downtrodden, it was started to make sure that policies, thinking and aims of
the bourgeoisie stay on the negotiation table and in the end pursued.
Coming
to India, as the European made their advent in the subcontinent the wealthy
people get a chance of educating their children in the science and commerce
which was missing from India that time as there was a huge null in the research
and development owing to numerous wars and drain of wealth to finance those
wars. Also, there were very few patrons of science and commerce that time. This
newly educated wealthy class employed in the East India Company office as
clerks were bullied by their officers about the social status of women, as
women was the most susceptible target of the British officers to show their superiority
in terms of thinking and civilisation. Thus, many of these Indian bourgeoisie,
started to reform the Indian society and we saw those people in form of Raja
Rammohan Roy, Dada Bhai Naoroji, Rabindranath Tagore, etc. but, this all
was done without of little support of the British Indian Government. Descendants
of this class in future demanded their aims to be pursued. And this was the
reason that initially the freedom struggle was not to gain independence from
the foreign rule but to get dominion status, post 1935 this class become interested
in capturing the power which British government will leave. Thus, Indian bourgeoisie,
captured the power of a vast resources of vast land like India. And now their
only aim is to module the governance so that at any cost either they or their
fellow bourgeoisie stay in power and the aim of both the group of set of
people will be fulfilled.
They use the state as an instrument
to achieve their aim, the habitats of the state were considered as bits and parts
of the great machine called ‘state’. The bourgeoisie ideology is
so strong that even largest communist revolution or the revolution of
the proletariat, could not over throw them instead the person who took to the
position of the ruler of that communist state covertly became a bourgeoisie.
This is the reason that most of the communist states or the workers heaven were
actually a hell for workers.
Taking all this in context the recent
COVID19 pandemic which took the world by surprise the most unguarded group are
the workers in general and migrant workers in particular. This was the case in
Wuhan where most of the family’s breadwinner is a man who go to Beijing and work.
Similar is the case in India where large number of migrant workers from Uttar
Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan and Odisha go to more developed southern states and
worker from Kerala, Andhra, Tamil Nadu go to gulf and work on construction sites.
This pandemic can be less tiring to these sections of Indian workers but due to
the century old ideology of the Indian bourgeoisie they are
reeling under intense stress. This stress was increased when government even
deny to pay the ticket of these worker from their work destination to their
native and political conflict was created by union and state government on the
cost sharing of the ticket fare. This is very sad that even after getting good
response on request to donate money in PM relief fund the same money is not
spent on the people who need it the most, this is a clear cut textbook example
of how management use to happen in the time of the independence, it better if
we all call is a ticket-scam.
This is not only a move which exposed
that all the political parties are made-up of same blood and flesh and strive
for identical aims. That aim is to keep the people aloof and rule under the
veil of nationalism, socialism, pro-poor, pro-farmer and many more ideologies. There
was chance in the midst of the freedom struggle to change the course of the
governance but that was lost when the freedom struggle of India was equated to
the freedom movement of a single party aka INC (Indian National Congress). But a
more unfortunate thing that occurred is that later political parties (BJP, BSP,
SP, AIADMK, DMK, TDP, etc) who claim to be pro-poor in letter and spirit failed
to make any dent on the conventional way of managing the state of affairs in
any democracy.
This is my attempt to make the
readers understand that all the political parties work for a unified aim and to
beat them we citizen should seek a unified demand who have a capability to
subdue the aim that these Indian bourgeoisie parties follow.
